You should say:

Su Shi was a highly influential Chinese poet who lived almost a thousand years ago. But poetry isn’t the only thing that he’s famous for. He was also an accomplished calligrapher, painter, and gastronome (美食家).

In short, the man’s a legend. And you probably think a genius like this would  somehow be aloof (高冷), arrogant and eccentric (古怪). But no, he was, in fact, kind, loving, and humorous. And according to an internet survey in China recently, he ranks No.1 in ‘the celebrities you want to be friends with’, regardless of time, of course.

I guess the reason we love him so much is that he’s such an inspiring figure. He was in political exile by the central government for over 3 decades. For anyone else, this could have meant long-lasting depression which can easily lead to despair, but not for him. He was a natural optimist and turned to food, friends, and literature for comfort, which happens to remind me of the book name Eat, Pray, Love. And that’s exactly what he did.

I am a big fan of him for he’s got such a personality. In one of his poems written during his last years, he said “问汝平生功业，黄州惠州儋州。”I hate to admit this, but I haven’t got a literal translation (字对字翻译) for the words. But the line (诗句) basically means If you ask me about my accomplishment in this life, I’d tell you three place names, and they are the three places of my exile.

You see, there’s nothing that can crush his soul, and I guess that’s why we can always find strengths in his poems. He’s remembered by Chinese people for nearly a thousand years, and I think he’s very likely to be still remembered for the next millennium (千年).
